and he's still calling me out. what did i tell youabout me? you know what i'm sayin'? i got somethingthat these guys want. announcer:"kid chocolate" quillin! quillin:it's about my name. it's about what i alreadyaccomplished. how many of y'all cameto see me? i can be the one that he fights

and creates the namehe's looking for. narrator:danny jacobs and peter quillin, each with somethingthe other wants. one with a belt... jacobs: i can't affordto lose this fight. my dreams of being a superstarwill all be over. narrator:the other with a reputation. quillin:he's got something to prove. i don't have anything to prove.

jacobs:this is a life-defining, career-defining win for me, and if i can get it,my whole everything will change. narrator:two men linked to a time, a place, and a borough. you know i fight forthe people in brooklyn, right? narrator:one man's future... will comeat the other's expense. [ rustling ]

neigh! neigh. narrator:the life peter quillin made for himself in brooklynwith his wife, allison, and their 14-month-old son,joaquin, couldn't be more differentthan the one he left behind in michigan 14 years ago. quillin:growing up in grand rapids, it was very, very, very tough,you know.

struggling and fightingon the street. it went from me, like,being picked on to me being a real bad guy, like being like,"don't mess with him." wah-wah! wah-wah. i was in and out of the streets. i was, like, you know, ravaged. i went in that boxing gym,

and i started to dedicatemy life around there, even through tryingto juggle that and the streets, and i ever told myself, like, if i had the opportunityto get out of michigan, i would. big boy. you know that i find,like, people where i'm from-- they recycle they kids through the strugglesthat they go through. you know what i mean?

like, i waited a long timeto have a kid. you know what i'm saying? because i wanted to make sure i can financially, you know,support him. narrator: in 2012, 11 years after arrivingin new york, he finally gotwhat he'd been working for: a shot at the title. it was the first card

at the new barclays centerin brooklyn. his opponent: hassan n'dam. both men were a perfect 27-0. announcer:so the crowd all jacked up for their own peter quillin. quillin is a guy who givesall credit to boxing for getting him off the streets. [ cheers and applause ] a nice counter left hand,

and a good left handdrops n'dam! crowd here at the barclayscenter on its feet as quillin has changedthis fight completely. coming in left,and down goes n'dam again! huge roundfor peter quillin here. both fighters--and a left hand drops n'dam! and that might decide itonce and for all. quillin: i think boxingis the only sport that really defines life,you know.

life is aboutfighting through the struggle, overcoming the struggle, and that's what a champion is,definitely, yeah. he--he get in there, and he overcome when people sayhe can't be a champion. he becomes a championfor hisself. announcer:and the new wbo middleweight champion of the world: peter "kid chocolate" quillin!

man: peter quillinis the winner and breaks down. very emotional right now. [ cheers ] quillin: i want to thankgrand rapids, michigan, for making me a fighter and new york citymaking me a man. narrator: it's a long roadquillin has travelled, but every so often,he circles back to move forward.

at 18,he arrived from grand rapids a teenager with only a dream. no money. no place to live. he even spent timein a homeless shelter. his first break:a job in the bronx. we had--knew a waiter.his name was ray. ray was a waiter at ihop. he got me a position there.

me getting that job, i felt a little bit more securethat i had some money coming in. [ indistinct chatter ] this guy right here--let me tell you something. so i was, you know,training with my trainer originally when we startedin this little pod of boxers-- all started during that time, and, you know, he's stillcompeting and everything. amazing guy, man.amazing guy.

thank you, man.appreciate it, man. and don't forget,starting off, coming from new york--very, very humble back then, and you're stilljust as humble now today. oh, man. thank you, man.i appreciate it, man. i get really emotionalwhen i come back here, because this jobhelped me out so much that we was, like, living broke, and it was like--it's the craziest thing

thank you, guys. i knew that if i harvestedand took it and lived itand made it my life, that it can change everything. narrator: no matterwhere his career has taken him, danny jacobsremains close to home, making his campin a basement in bed-stuy, not far from where he grew up. announcer:peter "kid chocolate" quillin

gets set to make the seconddefense of the title he won in october of 2012in his new hometown of brooklyn, new york. announcer: danny jacobs,a fellow new yorker. there's talk that he may,in fact, get a shot. this is about two years ago. i've been telling you, it's been brewingfor a while. i've been wanting itfor a long time, man.

it's finally here. jacobs: peter quillin, hemight not be the champion now, but he has that titleof brooklyn. he has that. but now it's my time, and i'm comingto take that crown. beat that chocolateout of quillin! [ laughing ] you got it.show me how i'ma do it.

[ grunting ] yes. yes! narrator: among the benefitsof training at home is jacobs' six-year-old son,nathaniel, a frequent visitor at camp. woman: we gotanother jacobs? jacobs: my son is oneof the biggest boxing fans you'll ever see. you sound like daddy.

jacobs: you know, as a father, to have your sonadmire what you do, it's like the greatest thingin the world. daddy?yes, sir. why do you make that noise?like, "uh, uh, uh." uh! yeah. yeah. why i make that noise? yes.

'cause it's sexy. y--oh! you funny. you guys are crazy. jacobs: me growing up,i didn't really have too many great examplesas a kid, and... [ somber music ] [ sobs ] i mean, i lovemy father to death. i love my fatherwith all my heart,

but i didn't really have thebest relationship with my dad. i know my parents didn'thave it all to give to me, and i vowedthat if i ever had a child, that i would give him my all and everything that i've alwayswanted from my father. to know that he understands thatand he gets it and he appreciates his father, man, it's just heartwarming,you know? i couldn't askfor anything better.

you know, i livearound the corner. i can walk to the gym. i can walk to the beach. the track is right there. i got a swimming poolin my same facility. everything is right herenear us. new york:apartments here, there, this. everybody's everywhere. then--aww, he's late.

the train gonna be not there,the cab. what about this?we got to go here. it's taking all day to get here. what happened to richie?you know what i mean? we don't know.ah-ah-ah-ah-ah... new york life. but now we down here,and we just like... looking like we from miami. look at me.you know what i mean?

all right.all right. 160.middleweight. i'm more well-knownand spotted out by cubans here than i ever--in my career. we are proud of you. damn. that means a lot right there. my father left cubato make opportunity, and i'm living testamentto that.

i got a cuban flag here,and my blood is cuban. narrator: the 5th street gymin miami beach, made famous by muhammad aliand his trainer, angelo dundee. but half a century later,quillin and his trainer, eric brown, are looking tocreate their own history here. we make surethat we keep doing like we was doing yesterday. he can only get better on it. that's gonna be the key...

yeah. to helping uswin this fight. ready, baby? let's go to work. come on. uh! [ both grunting ] brown: he's always had greatpunching power. he's become a much better boxerand better defensively. he knows how to fight.

good shot. good shot. that's what i likeright there. i don't know nothingabout my power. i never been hit by me. my logic to everythingis like, it's not really the power. it's really what's inside of medeep down, and that's what'spulling it out of me, and that's whatgive me the power that i need

to win fights. narrator: with 34 knock-downsin just 33 fights, quillin has ample power, but as the caliberof his opponents increase, critics have wondered if hisboxing ability has kept pace. quillin:every fighter is different, so let them have their opinionsabout me and their views. everybody's entitled to that. come on! uh!

quillin: what all changesis when we get in the ring and then you get himwith a good punch and his plan "a" doesn't work and he got to goto his plan "b." all those plansgo out the window. the fight is over. [ high-pitched beeping ] [ mellow music ] narrator: though his wifeand son remain in brooklyn,

quillin's father, pedro,has become a fixture in camp. it wasn't always this way, as his father was absentfor much of peter's childhood. now they're doing their bestto make up for lost time. quillin: when i gotreacquainted with my pops, i just--you know, i felta little bit more fulfilled as opposed to, you know,growing up without him. 15. come on. 15. hey, you got 15.

quillin: you know, the...that we do with each other is like, you know, it'salways gonna be special to me. like, you know, i losta lot of time with my dad. it's special to havea relationship with your pops like that. same 15... same 15.put my 15 down too. [ phone rings ] yay!

yeah, big boy. narrator: among the lessonsquillin has learned is to always be availablefor his own son. say, "papa." i started to give hima little sports massage. he liked those? he liked the massage? watch what happens.watch. ready? ready? you readyfor your sports massage?

yeah! [ laughs ] bye. say, "bye-bye." 15. say, "bye-bye." no, no, no. look!give him a kiss! [ speaks in spanish ] okay. i love you. you see the babylooking at you?

should i do... yeah.bring that with you. okay, great. thank you. narrator:most fighters are familiar with the pre-fight medical exam. it's part of the ritual. but this is something different. so i'm finally not nervousanymore about coming back here. oh, you were notlast time.

narrator: today,danny jacobs finds himself at new york-presbyterianhospital, as he does every six months, but there's nothing routineabout it. the middleweight champis a cancer survivor. may 2011 is when my lifegot shooken up. just come over here. jacobs: i was diagnosedwith bone cancer. just turn around here.

the cancer paralyzed me. tell me if there's any pain,any discomfort. you know, i remember when you-- you scraped the bottomof my feet, and i couldn't feel it. you couldn'tfeel that, right? i remember that. i know. yeah. unreal.yeah, i know.

my career, my life--everything was in jeopardy. narrator: doctors removeda handball-sized tumor. it was wrapped aroundjacobs' spine. but that was just the startof a grueling rehabilitation. jacobs: i remember getting25 counts of radiation, and every time,it would shift my attitude. it would make me nauseousand feeling just drained, drained of life. doctor said, "you might not beable to walk 100% again,"

and they definitely said, "youwouldn't be able to box again." as a fighter, that just flippedmy whole world upside down. i remember that determinationthat i had to get back, to prove the doctors wrong, to accomplish my dreamsand my goals. narrator:15 months after his diagnosis, he returned to the ring, the first televised fightat the barclays center. the same night,quillin won his title.

announcer: what a storyof this young man, and he's already wonthe biggest battle in his life. [ cheering ] announcer: and that hurt him,and the left hand dropped him! and it's over just like that! a triumphant returnfor danny jacobs! all i could rememberwas just running to the ropes and jumping at it,raising my hand, and saying, "i'm back!

i'm back!" narrator:jacobs didn't merely survive. he fought his way backinto contention. announcer: and this fighthas been stopped! narrator: a little more thanthree years after his diagnosis, in august 2014, he returnedto the barclays center with a chance to winthe vacant wba title. announcer: the brooklyn nativeteeing off on fletcher! down goes fletcher!

and daniel jacobshas made history! jacobs:they told me i could never box. they told me i wouldn'twalk proper. but that's what i did. i proved everyone wrong, so brooklynis in effect tonight. [ clanking ] jacobs: they're gonna be doinga breast cancer walk today at prospect park,and there's gonna be

thousands of people there,you know, supporting and honoring, you know,friends and loved ones. you know, i'm going thereto do my part and spread some of the loveand represent. i was actually at the fightwhen you won the title. there we go.barclays center! there we go. yes, ma'am. i remember oncelooking at cancer as,

"i didn't do anythingto deserve this." beautiful tree, dad! look! that is a beautiful tree, baby. but, you know,as i got older and as i got wiser,i realized that this was the biggest blessingthat i can possibly have. i became the first cancersurvivor to be a world champion. wow!whoa! so...yeah, yeah, yeah.

people can say,"you know what? if he can do it,i can do it too." oh! finish line, finish line.we did it, baby. i walked four miles!i lost so much weight! wba middleweightchampion... and four-yearcancer survivor too. and a four-yearcancer survivor! that's right.

let's give it up, folks. danny jacobs,the champion! thank you very much.i appreciate it. thank you. yes, ma'am.let's go. thank you very much. narrator:when you train in miami, the beach is your gym. today, quillin works with hisstrength and conditioning coach, and joining in is longtimefriend and camp manager

johnny burress. get ready. [ whistle blasts ] come on, come on. i met peter seventh grade,middle school. actually, the first timei ever met him, he just knocked somebody out. quick, quick, quick,quick, quick, quick, quick! and i was like, "i don't knowif i want to go to this school

if they gonna be doing thisevery day." use your legs. stop! use your legs.come on! there you go. burress: he's, like, ready to goright now. and it's a lot of people therethat's gunning for him. that's a lot of peoplethat's gonna be, you know-- they gonna be sadonce they get in the ring and get hit by a bull. i want you to work on technique,

but the timinghas to be perfect. that meansyou throw two punches, i want those punchesto be quick. i don't want them to be slow. two punches: bam-bam! let's go. we're done. nice stuff. good. narrator:preparing for battle is usually a gruelingand solitary affair,

but with the fightjust weeks away, quillin's family and friendsgather to break the monotony and throw a surprise partyin his honor. allison: we spent a couple weeksplanning together. we've flown in secretly. everything was bookedbehind his back. all: surprise! yes!hi, petey! i wasn't even expecting this.you know what i'm saying?

you wasn't?you had no... we got to do stuffwithout you knowing everything. oh, man.i'm--thank you for everything. this is, like--this means a lot. i don't get a lot of surpriseslike this. [ baby crying ] we scared you. oh. aww. go aheadand have a seat.

we're gonna show you something. sit down. allison: the other surprisewe did for him is, we had everyonerecord a greeting on their phone and send it to us. we put together a montageof well wishes-- people really special to him, people that have known himfor years. i know he'sgonna be really touched.

you inspire meto make more sacrifices, man. good luck on the fight, man.go get him, champ. woman: you've taught me a lotabout what it means to be a good person. you're my championinside the ring, and more importantly, you'remy champion outside the ring. both: knock 'em dead, tiger! hi, pete. wanted to wish you all the beston your upcoming fight.

[ shoes squeaking ] he frequented the brownsvillerec center as a kid, but now,as reigning middleweight champ, he's come to seethe marching band. [ drumming ] they call themselves"the approaching storm." but like jacobs himself,they're from the neighborhood, and they'll herald his entranceon fight night.
